We start our morning everyday brushing our teeth and end every night washing off our cosmetics. That being said, much thought and consideration should go into choosing your bathroom sink. Unfortunately in many cases, homeowners don’t know where to start when choosing the perfect sink for their space. Let’s take a few moments to look at some of the most common sink styles: traditional and contemporary.

Traditional sinks are very simply stated just that: traditional. Traditional sinks are usually either a molded or inlayed sink made from porcelain or ceramic materials. Some traditional spaced also use tile as a material for constructing a built in sink. A very popular sink type for smaller spaces is the pedestal sink. This is a small bowl sink that can be rounded or squared resting on a thin pedestal, making it ideal for small bathrooms. The first type of sink was no more than a bowl of water with no drain and no running water. As technology of the time progressed, this idea moved to a sink station contraption that included a stand with a built in bowl and the belt height. The bowl usually was porcelain and painted decoratively with a matching pitcher of water that sat either inside the bowl or on its own section of the stand. The stand usually included a towel rack and other small storage area.

Contemporary and modern designs usually incorporate straight lines that suggest simplicity in an artistic way. A popular shape for modern sink design is low profile square. We have seen beautiful sleek white porcelain sinks that are square in shape with low walls and amazing lines. Another favorite shape to use in contemporary design is the triangle. Straight lines can sometime be molded into subtle curves and often a very contemporary sink can be used in traditional design to create emphasis and interest.

Choosing a sink for you bathroom space can be a pleasurable and fun experience. Keep an open mind and try to reach outside the box. You will know when you find the perfect bathroom sink for your space. Be sure to compliment your new addition with appropriate hardware and faucet. Accessorize, but do not over-accessorize. You want to show off the sink, not bury it.
